Updates: Ayodhya verdict sees guarded response from oppn as SC gives disputed land to govt

The Supreme Court ruled that the disputed site belonged to Hindus and a 5-acre plot will be handed over to Sunni board in Ayodhya for construction of a mosque.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court delivered a unanimous verdict in the contentious and politically-sensitive Ayodhya land dispute case Saturday, giving the Centre three months to set up a trust to ensure the construction of a Ram temple, and ordered five acres of an alternate plot for the Muslim party to build a mosque

The decision comes a week before Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi retires.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation, and congratulated the apex court for its decision, and said today marked a new beginning on several fronts. Earlier in the day, the PM was in Punjab to inaugurate the Indian side of the Kartarpur Corridor.

08:15pm: There were no reports of violence after the Supreme Court’s verdict on the Ayodhya dispute.
