Lakhimpur Kheri, Oct 15 (PTI) A six-year-old boy was attacked and killed by a leopard in the Dudhwa buffer zone here, officials said on Thursday.

This comes nearly 48 hours after a similar incident in the same buffer zone, when a leopard caught a seven-year-old girl, who was playing outside her house in Bojhiya village on Monday night. The girl, Saniya, was dragged away by the big cat in front of her father.

The latest incident took place on Wednesday night in Naurangabad village in the north Nighasan range of the buffer zone. A leopard attacked and killed six-year-old Navjot Singh when he was on his way home with his father Joga Singh.

Despite the efforts of the boy’s parents and villagers, he could not be rescued. The child’s body was recovered from a nearby sugarcane field close to the reserved forest area while the errant leopard disappeared into the darkness, officials said.

Two leopard attack deaths in a row have left the Dudhwa buffer zone authorities concerned.

Nighasan Sub-Divisional Officer Manoj Tiwari rushed to the spot with Range Officer Bhupendra Singh and other field staff. He said leopard attacks had become a matter of serious concern.

Tiwari said cages were being set up in the area and the leopard’s movement would be monitored through thermal drones, patrolling and combing.

The two deaths have triggered panic and severe resentment among people, who demanded effective resolution to the big cat menace in the area. PTI COR KIS RUK

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
