New Delhi, Jul 28 (PTI) Top Left front leaders met here on Tuesday, and hailed the outcome of the Jantar Mantar protests as a “significant victory” for the youth movement and demanded an end to what they termed a “witch hunt” against student activists.
The meeting at Charu Bhawan was attended by CPI General Secretary D Raja, CPI(M) General Secretary M A Baby and CPI(ML) Liberation General Secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya, along with other senior leaders of the three parties.
The discussions centred around the prevailing political situation and strengthening coordination on common issues.
In a joint statement issued after the meeting, the parties congratulated student-youth activists of Left student organisations and the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) for the “courage, creativity and determination” with which they “braved police repression” during the Jantar Mantar protests, saying the agitation had forced the resignation of former Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
The Left parties said BJP governments “everywhere” must honour the Jantar Mantar amnesty agreement and stop the “witch hunt” against activists of the student-youth movement.
They said the spirit of the Jantar Mantar protests should be carried forward to secure reforms in the education and examination system and ensure the right to secure and dignified employment.
The parties also agreed to step up coordination on trade union, farmer, rural labour and women’s fronts, while pressing for economic relief for working people and immediate implementation of 33 per cent reservation for women in Parliament and state assemblies.
They also stressed the need for closer cooperation against what they described as the ‘fascist offensive’ of the Sangh Parivar and BJP-led governments.
Besides the three general secretaries, the meeting was attended by CPI leaders Rama Krushna Panda and Dr Girish, CPI(M) leader Arun Kumar, and CPI(ML) Liberation leaders Ravi Rai, Sanjay Sharma, Sucheta De, Shweta Raj and Prabhat Chaudhary.
The leaders also paid homage to Charu Mazumdar — the founder of Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) and a central figure in the Naxalbari movement — on his 54th martyrdom anniversary. PTI AO ARB ARB
