Kolkata, May 8 (PTI) The Left Front held a rally in central Kolkata on Friday to protest the alleged attacks on the working class and the vandalism of Lenin’s statues in West Bengal following the BJP’s landslide win in the assembly polls.
Leading the rally in the Esplanade area, Left Front chairman Biman Bose said that the unity of people irrespective of their political affiliation is crucial for the state.
Alleging that statues of communist icon Lenin were vandalised in Jadavpur in the southern outskirts of Kolkata and at Jiaganj in Murshidabad district, he said, “Those who are going to take oath tomorrow are trying to divide people in the name of religion, caste and creed.” Maintaining that the revolutionary leader and the first head of the Soviet Union, Lenin, strived to unite people, Bose said vandalising his statues and busts was a reprehensible act.
“The rally also protested attacks on the working classes across Bengal in the name of victory celebrations,” he said.
The Left Front, which could not win a single seat in the 2021 assembly polls as well as in the 2019 and 2024 Lok Sabha elections from the state, managed to break the jinx this time with the CPI(M) winning the Domkal seat in Murshidabad.
Its ally, ISF, retained the Bhangar constituency in the South 24 Parganas district.
The BJP won 207 seats in the 294-member Assembly in West Bengal, while the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress bagged 80. PTI AMR NSD
