Kolkata, Sep 18 (PTI) The CPI(M) on Friday claimed that the Left, democratic and secular forces would emerge as the main opposition to the BJP in West Bengal, alleging that the TMC was facing an organisational crisis in the state.
The statement came amid an ongoing dispute between rival Trinamool Congress factions over the party’s name and electoral symbol ahead of the October 6 bypolls.
The Election Commission on Friday allotted the Mamata Banerjee-led faction the name ‘Mamata All India Trinamool Congress’ and the ‘Football Player’ symbol, while the rival faction led by Arup Roy was allotted the name ‘Democratic Trinamool Congress’ and the ‘Envelope’ symbol.
CPI(M) central committee member Sujan Chakraborty said the developments had taken place sooner than expected.
“The Left, democratic and secular forces will play the role of the main opposition to the BJP in the state,” he told PTI.
Chakraborty said the TMC had lost its earlier party identity and symbol in just four months after the assembly poll results.
“After the party and the symbol, they have now lost the candidate also,” he said, referring to the withdrawal of Sanchita Pradhan Dey, the Mamata Banerjee camp’s candidate for the Nandigram assembly bypoll.
He alleged that Banerjee’s decision to support the Congress candidate in Nandigram was because of desperation.
Banerjee on Friday announced that her faction would support the Congress candidate in the Nandigram bypoll after Pradhan Dey withdrew her nomination.
