Bengaluru, Oct 5 (PTI) The Karnataka government has notified two per cent reservation for sportspersons in all direct recruitments under the state civil services, Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara said on Monday.
He said the reservation would apply across the General, Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe categories, as well as each category under the Other Backward Classes.
“Karnataka’s sportspersons continue to bring pride to the state on national and international platforms. Recognising their talent, encouraging achievement and ensuring a secure future beyond their sporting careers remain key priorities for our government,” Parameshwara, who holds Sports portfolio posted on ‘X’.
“In a major step to expand opportunities for sportspersons in government service, we have issued an official notification providing two percent reservation for sportspersons in all direct recruitments under the Karnataka Civil Services,” he said.
According to the deputy CM, sportspersons who have lived in Karnataka for at least 10 years and represented the state at the national or international level would be eligible for the reservation.
Bonus marks would also be awarded based on sporting achievements in 34 notified disciplines, including Olympics and Asian Games, he said.
Stating that the government’s support would not end with a medal, Parameshwara assured that it will stand with sportspersons at every stage of their journey — providing opportunities for talent, recognition for achievement and security for the future.
Regarding cash incentives for sportspersons, in the wake of the recently concluded Asian Games, Parameshwara, earlier in the day said Karnataka was reviewing its awards in comparison with those offered by other states.
The revised cash awards will be announced on Tuesday after discussions with Chief MinisterD K Shivakumar, he said.
“We have obtained information regarding higher awards being offered in other states and reviewed it. I have already discussed with the chief minister the need to revise the cash awards in Karnataka as well,” he added. PTI KSU SA
