Thiruvananthapuram, Sep 7 (PTI) The KSHRC on Monday directed the DME to investigate the death of an 87-year-old patient at the government medical college hospital here after he fell from his bed.
The direction was issued by Kerala State Human Rights Commission Chairperson Justice Alexander Thomas, who asked the Director of Medical Education to ascertain whether there were any lapses in the treatment or facilities provided by the hospital to the patient.
The DME was directed to submit in writing the changes required in the safety protocol for patients after examining the deceased’s postmortem report.
The commission further ordered that the investigation being conducted by the medical college principal on the DME’s instructions should be transparent and effective, and that medical experts should exercise due vigilance in the matter.
The commission directed the DME to submit a report within six weeks, along with all relevant documents, including the FIR and the investigation and postmortem reports.
Justice Alexander Thomas also directed the inspector of the medical college police station to clarify whether a case had been registered under Section 194 (unnatural death) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita.
The commission said that if a case had been registered, details of the progress and current status of the investigation, as well as the time required to complete the probe, should be submitted.
It directed the deputy DME and a representative of the station house officer to appear before it on the next date of hearing on November 2.
