Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 1 (PTI) The Kerala State Human Rights Commission has directed authorities to ensure that elderly and infirm persons visiting state treasuries are not subjected to hardship and receive services with dignity and sensitivity.

Commission Chairperson Justice Alexander Thomas directed the Thiruvananthapuram District Treasury Officer to issue appropriate instructions to treasury officials to ensure timely service and respectful treatment of senior citizens.

The direction came while considering a complaint filed by S K Seema, a resident of Gurudev Nagar in Pallichal, alleging that her ailing mother was subjected to physical and mental hardship when she visited the Neyyattinkara Pension Payment Sub-Treasury to receive her family pension on August 29, 2024.

According to the complaint, the woman, who had undergone spinal surgery and was suffering from severe pain, was allegedly made to walk to the cash counter instead of being assisted.

The District Treasury Officer informed the Commission that the complainant was no longer interested in pursuing the matter and had only sought measures to ensure that elderly and infirm persons visiting treasuries were treated with due consideration in future.

Taking note of the submission, the Commission issued the directions and closed the case. PTI LGK SSK
