Thiruvananthapuram, Jul 4 (PTI) The Kerala Health Department on Saturday decided to shift patients from the overcrowded Government Medical College Hospital here to the Pulayanarkotta Chest Hospital to ease congestion and prevent patients from being accommodated on the floor.
The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by state Health and Devaswom Minister K Muraleedharan, attended by senior officials of the Health and Medical Education departments and heads of major hospitals in the district, according to an official statement.
Patients from the General Medicine department, among others, will be shifted to the 500-bed Pulayanarkotta Chest Hospital, where adequate inpatient care, including for infectious disease cases, can be ensured during the monsoon, when patient numbers usually increase.
Muraleedharan said the move was part of the Health Department’s policy to ensure that no patient is made to stay on the floor due to overcrowding.
The meeting also decided to strengthen the Government General Hospital by ensuring round-the-clock functioning of key departments, including Cardiology, to reduce the patient load at the Medical College Hospital.
The minister directed officials to immediately set up a canteen at the General Hospital and expedite pending infrastructure works, including the construction of a ramp and repair of leakages.
The meeting also decided to speed up the hospital’s master plan works by appointing an experienced agency as the Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV), following concerns over delays in the project.
Muraleedharan further announced that a new CT scan machine would be installed at the General Hospital with the support of the Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology (RGCB).
The facility would provide scanning services at rates lower than the existing charges, while RGCB would bear the rent and electricity expenses, the statement added. PTI LGK ROH
