Thrissur (Keralam), Sep 18 (PTI) Signs of internal friction have surfaced in the Kerala Congress (Joseph), a constituent of the ruling UDF in Keralam, with two groups of party workers clashing in Irinjalakuda here on Friday and chairman P J Joseph ordering a party inquiry into the incident.
There are reports that senior Kerala Congress (Joseph) leader Thomas Unniyadan, who represents the Irinjalakuda constituency, is unhappy over not being given a ministerial post after the UDF government came to power.
A group claiming to be supporters of Unniyadan and members of the official faction clashed at Irinjalakuda on Friday afternoon, police said.
Party workers said one faction had organised a felicitation event for Unniyadan in Thrissur, while another faction held a leadership meeting of party leaders in the Irinjalakuda Assembly constituency.
The clash took place at the venue where the leadership meeting was being held, police said.
Police soon rushed to the scene and defused the situation after an hour-long standoff between the two factions.
Two party workers suffered minor injuries in the clash, police said.
P J Joseph told reporters in Kottayam that an inquiry would be conducted into the incident.
Asked whether Unniyadan was unhappy with the party leadership, Joseph said the matter would also be looked into.
Senior party leader and Minister Mons Joseph described the incident as a local issue in Irinjalakuda.
“We understand that it is an issue in the Assembly constituency. The chairman saying that the matter will be investigated is the official stand of the party,” he said. PTI TBA SSK
