New Delhi: When 69-year-old Hoor did not step out to ask for alms for two consecutive days in front of a mosque in Sabdarabad mohalla of Mandya in Karnataka, residents grew concerned. Finally, they broke into her house. Hor was there—seemingly comatose. Next to her were sacks of coins and cash, later found to contain all of Rs 8.40 lakh.
“When locals broke open her house they found her lying in an unconscious state. They took her to a local hospital where she was declared brought dead,” said Deputy Superintendent of Police (Mandya Sub-division) H. Lakshminarayana Prasad. Next to Hoor were several sacks full of coins and notes, the DSP said. He further told ThePrint that the locals then called Hoor’s two brothers who lived in Bengaluru to inform them about her death.
“Hoor’s body was handed over to her brothers and after cremation when they came back to her residence, they found several sacks full of coins and notes of several denominations amounting to Rs 8.40 lakh,” he said.
As per the officer, every bag was devoted to a single denomination of coins or notes. “Rs 2 and 5 coins and notes of Rs 10 and 50 was the division,” said the DSP.
“Two days after the funeral, the two brothers divided the money, one took Rs 2 lakh and donated to the mosque in front of which she used to seek alms and the other brother took Rs 6.40 lakh for his personal use,” said the officer.
The police told ThePrint that no case has been registered in the matter as there is no official complaint regarding her death or the money found in her room.
