Bengaluru, Aug 7 (PTI) The state government has earmarked a special allocation for the promotion and development of the handloom sector under the forthcoming Karnataka Textile and Apparel Policy, Rohini Sindhuri, Secretary, MSME, Mines and Textiles Department said on Friday.
She was speaking after presenting awards at the State-level celebration of the 12th National Handloom Day held here.
According to her, Karnataka’s handloom tradition is not merely a cultural legacy but also the primary source of livelihood for thousands of weaving families.
While preserving this heritage, the government is equally committed to modernising the sector and making it relevant to changing market demands so that it reaches the younger generation, she said.
The special package will support initiatives such as design development, product value addition, branding, digital marketing, e-commerce, market expansion, and enhancing the competitiveness of Karnataka’s handloom products, she added.
According to an official statement, Sindhuri also inaugurated the Handloom Products Exhibition and Sales Pavilion here.
Textiles Development Commissioner A B Basavaraju said the new Textile Policy is being designed with the objective of making Karnataka’s handloom products more competitive in both domestic and international markets.
“Karnataka’s handloom sector is an invaluable asset to our culture and economy. Through the new Textile Policy and the statewide social media campaign, we aim to take Karnataka’s handloom products to national and global markets more effectively,” he said.
The department is giving special priority to design innovation, technology adoption, branding, and market linkages so that the exceptional skills of our weavers receive global recognition, he added. PTI AMP KH
