Bengaluru, Sep 17 (PTI) The Karnataka Cabinet will consider the proposed ‘Karavali Malnad Karnataka Tourism Policy 2026’ at its meeting in Mangaluru on September 18, Tourism Minister K J George said on Thursday.
The policy seeks to provide a dedicated framework for tourism development across the coastal and Malnad (Western Ghats or hilly) regions, taking into account their distinct geography, ecology, culture and economic potential, he said.
According to George, the coastal and Malnad belt offers significant opportunities in beach and river tourism, Western Ghats, heritage, religious and cultural tourism, and nature-based experiences.
The proposed policy aims to bring infrastructure development, private investment, local participation and destination planning under a coordinated framework, his office said in a release.
It also seeks to generate direct economic opportunities for fishing communities, homestay operators, small businesses and youth while ensuring protection of environmentally sensitive areas.
“The coastal and Malnad regions have distinct tourism strengths and require a policy suited to their geographical, environmental and cultural characteristics,” George said.
He said the policy was formulated following consultations with local elected representatives, tourism stakeholders and the public, with an emphasis on linking tourism development with local livelihoods and employment.
The proposed policy will be placed before the Cabinet for consideration at its Mangaluru meeting on Friday, he added. PTI KSU KH
