Chennai, Oct 26 (PTI) DMK Deputy General Secretary Kanimozhi on Monday criticised Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay over the state’s law and order situation and questioned the TVK government’s commitment to women’s safety.

Accusing the administration of “complete inactivity” regarding women’s safety, she highlighted cases of missing children in Senji and Ranipet, claiming the government has “failed” to take adequate measures to find them or provide justice.

Listing various incidents, including the murder of a woman in Madurantakam and a violent attack on a family in Thoothukudi, the DMK MP expressed concern that criminal elements felt emboldened by political patronage.

“They have announced a scheme called ‘Thaimaman Seer’ (Maternal Uncle’s Gift),” the DMK MP told reporters here.

“But the maternal uncle himself is nowhere to be found. The maternal uncle who is supposed to protect us – where did he go? … That is the situation in Tamil Nadu today,” she said.

Kanimozhi alleged that ruling party functionaries are directly involved in criminal activities and sexual violence, acting with impunity under the belief that they are protected by the ruling party.

She recalled previous claims made by Vijay regarding the state’s law and order, and asked, “Is this a (welfare) state or a forest (lawless land)?”

The DMK leader called upon the government to acknowledge its responsibilities, protect the public, especially children and act with conscience.

She alleged that the general public in Tamil Nadu felt unsafe and were living in constant fear regardless of whether they were at home or outside.

Before taking office, Vijay frequently criticised the state’s law and order, vowing to fix it if he came to power. But the same concerns he once raised specifically about safety are now being echoed back at his administration, she pointed out.

Expressing similar sentiment, DMK president M K Stalin had said the public has been terrified by the unprecedented number of murders, robberies, sexual assaults and disappearances of children in Tamil Nadu for the past two months.

“Did Vijay predict this in advance and speak like Nostradamus before the election, asking, “Is this a country or forest?” The people who voted believing what they saw on screen as a gun-wielding hero protecting people have started talking about a hero lacking (substance) to prevent crimes,” Stalin said in a post on X. Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
