Muzaffarnagar (UP), Oct 25 (PTI) Additional District and Sessions Judge Ravi Kumar Diwakar, who awarded 23 death sentences in six months, has been transferred to the family court in Muzaffarnagar after an order of the Allahabad High Court, officials said on Sunday.

Diwakar, who was presiding over a fast-track court, has been appointed Additional Principal Judge of the family court.

According to the high court order, Shiv Kumari will take over as the Additional District and Sessions Judge of the fast-track court.

Diwakar had awarded 23 death sentences in 11 cases between April and September this year.

He recently questioned the withdrawal of 97 part-heard cases involving murder and other serious offences from his court through administrative orders issued by the then District and Sessions Judge, B K Singh, in August.

In a 35-page judgment acquitting an accused in a nearly 10-year-old NDPS case, Diwakar questioned whether cases in which hearings had commenced could be withdrawn through administrative orders without following the procedure prescribed by law.

He also raised concerns over judicial independence and the limits of administrative powers exercised by district judges. PTI COR CDN SKY

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
