Dhanbad (Jharkhand), Sep 1 (PTI) Advisor to the prime minister, Tarun Kapoor, on Tuesday reviewed rehabilitation measures for fire and land subsidence-hit families in the coal hub of Dhanbad in Jharkhand, an official statement said.
Kapoor, who arrived in Dhanbad on Monday, visited Belgharia and Karmatand townships set up by Jharia Rehabilitation Development Authority (JRDA) and reviewed livelihood generation, skill development, education and other developmental initiatives being undertaken under the Jharia Master Plan (JMP).
“During his visit, Kapoor also interacted with rehabilitated families and locals to understand their requirements, expectations and concerns,” the Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL) statement said.
Residents highlighted the need for expansion of existing facilities and upgradation of older housing units.
Kapoor inspected the educational facilities and the multi-skill development institutes and interacted with the students and aspirants.
He said the objective of the rehabilitation programme was not merely relocation but to ensure that families affected by mine fires are provided with safe, dignified and improved living conditions.
“Joint Secretary (Ministry of Textiles) Alaknanda Dayal, who was part of the delegation, in her interaction with the officials, highlighted the potential for creating local employment and livelihood opportunities in the rehabilitation areas, including through the textile sector. She underlined the emerging opportunities in handmade fibre and technical textiles and provided necessary guidance to the officials concerned,” the statement said.
Kapoor inaugurated an upgraded primary school, a health sub centre and a model anganwadi centre-cum-prenursery school at Belgharia. The visit concluded with a review meeting chaired by Kapoor at the Dhanbad collectorate.
Kapoor directed the agencies concerned to accelerate rehabilitation efforts and accord priority to the safe and dignified rehabilitation of affected families.
He also emphasised the need to further strengthen education, healthcare, livelihood generation, skill development and basic infrastructure in the rehabilitation areas. PTI ANB ACD
