Hazaribag (Jharkhand), Aug 22 (PTI) Two gangsters were nabbed after a brief encounter with the police in Jharkhand’s Hazaribag district on Saturday, with both sustaining gunshot wounds in their legs, a senior officer said.

Acting on a tip-off, a police team intercepted three gangsters riding a motorcycle near Old Kantaghar in Giddi police station area in the early hours, he said.

“Upon spotting the police, the gangsters opened fire and tried to escape, but the security personnel retaliated, leading to a gunfight in which two of the miscreants sustained gunshot wounds in their legs,” Hazaribag Superintendent of Police (SP) Aman Kumar told reporters.

The duo, identified as Badal Kumar and Mohit Kumar, henchmen of the Rahul Dubey gang, were arrested after the encounter and they are undergoing treatment at a government hospital, but the third gangster managed to escape and a manhunt has been launched to nab him, the officer said.

Both the arrested accused hail from Ramgarh district.

During interrogation, the two arrested accused confessed to their involvement in a firing incident at a coal transporting site in the same police station area in July, in which a truck driver had sustained gunshot wounds, the SP said.

Police seized two pistols, two mobile phones, two cartridges, four empty shells and three pamphlets of the gang, besides the motorcycle, another officer said. PTI RPS RPS ACD

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
