Latehar, May 18 (PTI) A man died after being “accidentally” shot by a friend during animal poaching in a forest in Jharkhand’s Latehar district, police said on Monday.
The incident took place late on Sunday night in a forest adjoining Kalkalia village under the jurisdiction of the Balumath police station.
The deceased was identified as 40-year-old Rameshwar Oraon, a resident of the same village, they said.
“The victim was found shot dead in the forest area by one of his two friends. The three had gone to poach animals. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination at Sadar Hospital, Latehar,” said Amit Kumar, the officer in charge of Balumat police station.
Meanwhile, the deceased’s uncle, Nagdev Oraon, said Rameshwar had gone to the forest with two friends from the village.
After the shooting, both informed the village head Santu Oraon that they had gone poaching in different directions in the forest.
Mistaking the sound in the bushes for an animal, one of them fired, leading to Rameshwar’s death.
While villagers reached the spot after the incident, both had fled the scene, he said.
The police said a detailed investigation into the matter is underway. PTI COR RPS RPS NN
