Ranchi, Oct 26 (PTI) The Jharkhand BJP on Monday staged demonstrations in Ranchi in protest against Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s controversial remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi during an event in Patna.
Kharge had on Sunday sparked a controversy with his remarks “Modi ka baap bhi jayega”, in response to an audience member’s comment that “the PM would not go anywhere”.
The incident took place while Kharge, who is also Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, was speaking at the programme to celebrate the 139th birth anniversary of Bihar’s first chief minister, Shrikrishna Singh.
Hundreds of BJP workers from Ranchi and senior leaders of the party, including its state president Aditya Sahu and Leader of Opposition Babulal Marandi, marched to the Congress office here from the Jaipal Singh Munda stadium.
“The Congress and its prominent leaders never let go of any opportunity to abuse our prime minister. Kharge made indecent and offensive remarks against the PM, invoking his late father. His comments have created a furore across the nation,” Sahu asserted.
The BJP workers also raised the slogans ‘Stop abusing the Prime Minister’ and ‘India will not tolerate insults to the Prime Minister’ during the demonstration.
“Every party worker has taken to the streets against Kharge’s derogatory remarks,” Sahu added.
Marandi said the Congress must understand that people of the country will “never accept such disparaging remarks” against the PM.
“Insulting the prime minister reveals a mentality of insulting 140 crore people of the country. The Congress should apologise to the nation,” he said.
The Leader of Opposition in the state assembly said that criticism of the PM’s work and policies is part of democratic politics, “but dragging his late father into it and making such derogatory remarks against him cannot be justified from any point of view”.
“The Congress and its leaders have abused Modi on different occasions since he became the PM in 2014,” former state BJP president Deepak Prakash said. PTI RPS RBT
