Ballia (UP), Jun 12 (PTI) The Government Railway Police (GRP) has recovered Rs 36.25 lakh in unaccounted cash from a jewellery trader during a checking operation on the Chhapra Express in Uttar Pradesh’s Ballia district, an official said on Friday.
GRP Circle Officer Saviratna Gautam said a Ballia GRP team was conducting checks on the train travelling from Gomti Nagar in Lucknow to Chhapra in Bihar on Thursday when they found a man carrying a red bag in the sleeper coach.
The passenger was identified as Sanchit Agrawal, a resident of Nawab Sahab Ka Phatak area, he said.
During checking, police recovered Rs 36.25 lakh from his bag. Agrawal allegedly failed to provide a satisfactory explanation regarding the cash or produce any valid documents for it, the officer said.
During questioning, Agrawal claimed that he owned a jewellery shop in Ghazipur’s San Bazaar and was carrying the money to deliver it to another jewellery shop near Chhapra Kachhari station.
The GRP has informed the Income Tax Department’s Investigation Unit in Varanasi, which is examining the matter, officials said. Further legal action is underway. PTI COR KIS DV DV
