Jaipur, Oct 5 (PTI) Jaipur Development Authority on Monday began an anti-encroachment drive on New Sanganer Road to remove illegal constructions from over 250 houses and shops amid a massive protest from locals and traders.

A section of local residents and traders held demonstrations while the demolition drive was underway, saying that the action ahead of the festive season would affect their businesses and livelihoods.

The anti-encroachment drive is being carried out on a nearly three-kilometre stretch from Gurjar Ki Thadi to Sodala, officials said.

In the first phase, demolition work started on a stretch from Gurjar Ki Thadi.

Officials said New Sanganer Road is 100 feet wide on record but has narrowed to around 40 to 60 feet at several places due to encroachments and unauthorised constructions.

The JDA is carrying out the drive following directions of the Rajasthan High Court. It has to submit a compliance report before the court on October 6.

Heavy police were deployed in the area, and traffic was diverted during the anti-encroachment drive.

Officials said notices had already been issued to the affected property owners. Some traders also started removing portions of constructions on their own before the JDA action. PTI SDA KSI

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
