Jaipur, Oct 25 (PTI) A Jaipur-based NGO on Sunday called for awareness, timely medical intervention and lifelong support for people affected by spina bifida, a congenital condition involving improper development of the spine and spinal cord.

According to a statement, on World Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus Day, the NGO, Spina Bifida Afflicted for Strength Haleness and Awareness Foundation (SASHA Foundation), founder Vivek Bharadwaj stressed the need for accessible healthcare, rehabilitation and social inclusion.

Spina bifida is a condition that happens when a baby’s spine and spinal cord don’t form properly in the womb.

Bharadwaj said, spina bifida is not just a medical condition affecting a person at birth. It is a lifelong journey that requires continuous healthcare, rehabilitation, family support and social acceptance.

“Through the SASHA Foundation, our aim is to ensure that no child or family faces this journey alone and that every person living with spina bifida gets an opportunity to lead a dignified and independent life,” Bharadwaj said.

The non-profit foundation supports patients and caregivers through awareness, practical guidance and emotional support, while advocating equal opportunities for persons with disabilities.

Bharadwaj said coordinated efforts by healthcare institutions, policymakers and society were essential to improving the quality of life of people affected by the condition. PTI SDA SHS

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
