Jammu, Apr 18 (PTI) As many as 172 government employees were absent from duty during a surprise inspection in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday, prompting authorities to order immediate withholding of their salaries, officials said. In a firm step towards strengthening administrative discipline and accountability, Poonch Deputy Commissioner, Ashok Kumar Sharma, constituted dedicated teams to conduct surprise inspections across government offices in the border district. Acting on these directions, the teams carried out surprise visits across the entire district, including the district headquarters and found 172 employees absent from duty without authorisation, the officials said. Consequently, show-cause notices have been issued to all such employees, directing them to explain their position before disciplinary proceedings. Furthermore, all Drawing and Disbursing Officers (DDOs) have been directed to withhold the salaries of the absentee employees until further orders, the officials said. The deputy commissioner has reiterated the administration’s zero-tolerance approach towards absenteeism and emphasised strict adherence to duty, punctuality and accountability in public service delivery.
