New Delhi, Aug 2 (PTI) Indian Youth Congress (IYC) president Uday Bhanu Chib on Sunday met the families of students arrested after the July 25 protest in Bihar’s Bhagalpur and assured legal and medical assistance to the two youngsters still in custody.
Chib visited Bhagalpur as part of an All India Congress Committee (AICC) fact-finding committee constituted to look into the police action following the student protest. During the visit, the delegation met the Bhagalpur Superintendent of Police and the families of the affected students.
According to an official statement by Congress’ youth wing, Chib alleged that police teams had reached the homes of several students after the protest and made arrests, adding that the action was not confined to a single household.
“Many young students have left their homes out of fear, and their families do not know where they are. This is a matter of serious concern, and the entire incident needs to be investigated,” he said.
Chib said the Bhagalpur SP informed the delegation that an FIR had been registered against 42 people in connection with the protest. Of them, only two students remain in judicial custody while the others have been granted bail, he said.
He further alleged that 14 of those named in the FIR were minors and had already been released.
The IYC chief said the organisation was making efforts to provide legal as well as medical assistance to the two students still in jail and that the delegation had also met the family of one of them to assure them of support.
Appealing to students who had left their homes, Chib referred to the Supreme Court’s direction that no punitive action should be taken against students participating in the agitation. He urged them to return home and not to be afraid.
“They are the future of the country and raising one’s voice for one’s rights is a democratic right. If any student faces legal action, the Youth Congress and the Congress party will stand with them,” he said.
