Indore, May 3 (PTI) A two-day meeting of agriculture ministers of BRICS member countries under India’s presidency will be held in Indore in June to discuss food security, smart farming, global agricultural trade and farmer welfare.

Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav reviewed preparations for the event at a meeting with officials in the city on Sunday.

Chouhan told reporters that the ministerial meeting of BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) member countries will take place in Indore from June 12 to 13.

He said a three-day meeting of officials under the BRICS agriculture working group will be held in the city from June 9 to 11 ahead of the ministerial meet.

Chouhan said the five-day gathering will deliberate on food security, farmer welfare, nutrition, climate-resilient smart agriculture, facilitation of international agricultural trade, supply chains, digital agriculture, research, knowledge exchange, artificial intelligence, machine learning and robotics.

A joint declaration will be issued after consensus among the BRICS agriculture ministers, he added.

“The meeting, to be held under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, will prove to be a historic opportunity for the global agriculture sector. It will provide a new direction to the world,” Chouhan said.

Highlighting the significance of the meeting, he said BRICS countries account for about 42 per cent of the world’s agricultural land, 68 per cent of farmers, and 45 per cent of global grain production.

Chief Minister Yadav said delegates attending the meeting will receive a grand welcome in line with the state’s tradition of hospitality.

“Coincidentally, this meeting is being held at a time when the state government has declared 2026 as Agriculture Welfare Year,” he added. PTI HWP LAL NSK
