Aligarh (UP), Jun 17 (PTI) Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh on Wednesday said India has witnessed a major leap in digital technology since 2014, enabling social and economic empowerment of the country’s poorest sections through direct delivery of government benefits.

Delivering the annual Sir Syed Memorial Lecture at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), he said technological advancements have ensured that people receive the full benefits of welfare schemes through direct digital transfers.

Speaking on “The Role of Technology in Social Transformation (Indian Perspective)”, Harivansh said India is effectively using technology for economic transformation and empowering all sections of society, particularly the underprivileged and resource-poor.

“There is no doubt that the country faces various challenges due to its vast and diverse population and infrastructural limitations. However, while addressing these challenges, the government continues to move steadily towards empowering citizens and transforming India into a developed nation,” he said.

Referring to Aligarh Muslim University founder Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, Harivansh said he faced numerous challenges and opposition while pursuing educational and social reforms, and “that is why he is counted among the builders of modern India.” Highlighting various government initiatives, Harivansh cited the Digital India Mission, Direct Benefit Transfer, agri-drone technology, the PM-KISAN scheme, Unified Payments Interface, and disaster alert systems as examples of how technology was harnessed for inclusive development.

He said the government has worked to make technology accessible to all, significantly expanded electricity generation and helped India emerge as the world’s sixth-largest economy, with the benefits reaching ordinary citizens.

University Vice-Chancellor Naima Khatoon, who presided over the event, said the extensive use of technology in governance and welfare programmes in recent years has substantially improved people’s lives and deserves appreciation. PTI COR ABN RUK RUK
