New Delhi, May 6 (PTI) Ministry of Earth Sciences Secretary M Ravichandran on Wednesday inaugurated the urban testbed and aerosol observatory at the SRM Institute of Science and Technology in Chennai and said integration of data at the facility will lead to much more accurate weather forecasts.
The facility has been established by the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Pune, and hosts approximately 15 sophisticated instruments valued at more than Rs 60 crore.
“These instruments are designed to track nearly 50 types of atmospheric data, including weather patterns, wind flow, aerosol particles and temperature variations. The integration of this data will lead to much more accurate weather forecasts for the public,” Ravichandran said.
He added that analysing factors such as the size and speed of airborne particles, the transition between sea and land breezes and the organic or inorganic nature of aerosols will help better predict specific impacts on the weather.
“This facility is expected to provide vital short-term data regarding global warming in the region that will subsequently assist in researching long-term climate impacts,” Ravichandran said. PTI ALC PRK
