Guwahati, Oct 5 (PTI) Raijor Dal president Akhil Gogoi on Monday asserted that his indefinite sit-in demanding enhanced and prompt compensation for flood-hit eastern Assam districts will turn into a mass movement, if the chief minister fails to announce time-bound disbursement of the aid within next two days.
The Sivasagar MLA said the issues flagged by him were in the capacity of an elected representative, and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma should rise above party politics to fulfill obligations of his constitutional post.
“For the last three days, I have been sitting in protest, and the CM has been ridiculing and insulting me. It has deeply anguished me,” Gogoi said, observing his “indefinite satyagraha” on the state assembly premises here.
“He is the chief minister of the state and not of a party. If an MLA raises an issue with him, it is with the CM, and not a matter between two parties,” the opposition legislator said.
Gogoi said he would expect a response from Sarma for time-bound disbursement of the assistance within Wednesday, failing which a “mass movement will be launched”.
“The CM must say on record that the Rs 15,000 interim grant for all flood-hit families of Sivasagar, Charaideo and Jorhat districts will be given within 24 hours of his announcement… And, that the additional Rs 10,000 ex-gratia he had announced for Sivasagar and Charaideo families will be paid within 48 hours.
“The minimum Rs 10 lakh per family for these three districts that we have demanded be paid within October 31. And, the state government should assure of a CBI inquiry into the circumstances leading to this year’s devastating floods,” Gogoi said.
Gogoi maintained that as soon as the chief minister makes these announcements, he will immediately end his protest.
“He doesn’t have to come to meet or give me any credit. He must act as a CM who understands sufferings of the people. If he fails to announce these by October 7, we will launch a mass movement,” the Raijor Dal chief said. PTI SSG RBT
