Ahmedabad, Jun 28 (PTI) A 20-year-old man was nabbed on Sunday with 10,911 grams of hydroponic marijuana, valued at more than Rs 10 crore in the illicit market, at the Ahmedabad airport, officials said.

The passenger, placed under arrest, had arrived from Bangkok and concealed the narcotics in his checked-in baggage, they said.

“During examination of the passenger’s checked-in baggage, a sniffer dog gave a positive indication about the presence of narcotic drugs. Based on the baggage tag, officers of the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of Ahmedabad Customs identified and intercepted the passenger, who had arrived from Bangkok,” an official release stated.

The arrested passenger was identified as Ibrahim Sefulla (20), a resident of Gujarat’s Junagadh district, Ahmedabad Customs Additional Commissioner S R Vishnoi told PTI.

A thorough examination of the passenger’s checked-in trolley bag led to the recovery of five silver-coloured polythene packets containing green-coloured plant material, the release said.

“The recovered substance was tested using a field test kit, which returned a positive result for hydroponic marijuana (ganja). The total net weight of the recovered contraband was 10,911 grams,” it said.

Vishnoi said the estimated value of the smuggled hydroponic marijuana in the illegal market was over Rs 10 crore.

“The contraband was seized under provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and further investigation was underway,” the release said.

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
