Mumbai, June 20 (PTI) Days after being accused of assault and mental torture by his wife, hotelier Prahlad Advani on Thursday claimed matrimonial discord was at the root of the allegations.

Advani also said that it is unfortunate that the police machinery was being used to hold him and the family “at ransom” to settle the discord.

The statement from a legal team representing Advani and his family claimed that allegations levelled by his wife in the First Information Report registered at Worli police station here were “reckless, baseless and false”.

“This clearly is an attempt to malign the reputation of the husband and his senior citizen parents and the listed entity,” the late evening statement said. Advani is the chief executive officer of Advani Hotels.

The allegations were levelled “as an afterthought and a counterblast” after Advani expressed his desire to obtain a divorce from his wife through a notice dated April 15, the statement claimed.

A petition for divorce was pending before the family court while the wife had filed a domestic violence complaint in the magistrate’s court, it said.

“With the documentary evidence in our possession, we will be able to establish that the allegations are totally false and concocted. We intend to co-operate with the police and demonstrate that the complaint is replete with inaccurate and false statements and a counterblast,” it said.

In her complaint, Advani’s 43-year-old wife also named his 85-year-old father Sundargurdas and mother Menaka (78).

She was subjected to torture between November 2012 to June 12, 2024, she alleged. Based on her complaint, a case of criminal breach of trust, voluntarily causing hurt and intentional insult was registered, the police had said on Wednesday.
