Gurugram: Three men have been arrested, and a minor detained, for allegedly gangraping a 35-year-old woman and her five-year-old daughter, and also strangulating the child to death, in Haryana’s Jind.
Jind’s Superintendent of Police Kuldeep Singh told ThePrint that the four were apprehended Saturday from near a canal bridge on Ikkas Bypass, based on a tip-off. On Sunday, the three arrested—Hameed Khan (46), Biru (18) and Shiva (19)—were presented in court, and sent to one-day police remand for further interrogation.
The police said that while they have not secured identity proof of the accused so far for the verification of age, both Biru and Shiva are aged above 18.
The 13-year-old minor has been sent to a juvenile correctional facility.
The four had been absconding since the incident came to light when the survivor lodged a complaint on 24 April.
The incident had occurred on the night of 21 April, triggered by a heated argument between the woman and Khan, according to officers at Jind City Police Station where the FIR has been registered. The four accused were allegedly consuming alcohol near the woman’s shanty in Jind’s Tapriwas Colony.
The woman, a ragpicker, whose husband was not at home that night, got involved in a spat with the group. Enraged after she allegedly addressed Khan using a derogatory word, he dragged her by her hair to a nearby garbage dump near the railway tracks. The woman’s daughter, hearing her mother’s cries, followed them, the police said.
The child was allegedly trapped by the accused in a blanket. Khan raped the woman, while the others took turns assaulting the daughter, the police added. When the child screamed and struggled, Shiva and the other two allegedly smothered her by pressing her mouth and neck, leading to her death.
The accused then allegedly proceeded to gangrape the mother, leaving her unconscious at the site before fleeing, the police said.
The child’s body was found lying about 100 metres away from the mother the next morning by the locality’s residents. There were bloodstains on the child’s mouth and legs and visible injury marks on her neck, according to the police.
However, the family, assuming that it was an accidental death, buried the child at a burial ground near Bankhandi Mahadev Temple, without informing the authorities. The survivor then regained consciousness after about 48 hours on 23 April, and narrated the ordeal to the family. On 24 April, she lodged a complaint at Jind City Police Station.
The police, under the supervision of SP Singh, exhumed the child’s body in the presence of a duty magistrate, and sent it for postmortem examination at BPS Government Medical College for Women, Khanpur Kalan in Sonepat.
The autopsy report confirmed that the five-year-old had been gangraped before her death, corroborating the mother’s account. The medical examination of the mother also confirmed gangrape.
Following the postmortem, the police added charges under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, along with sections corresponding to gangrape and murder under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The survivor is currently receiving medical care and is reported to be stable, the police said.

The mainstream media, both print and TV/internet, is silent on this atrocious rape and murder incident.
It’s quite easy why the mainstream media is not interested. This heinous crime just does not fit into the mould they love. The victim is a Dalit Hindu woman while the perpetrator is a Muslim man. No wonder the media has chosen to brush under the carpet this horrendous crime.
Though one can clearly imagine the outrage on mainstream media if the victim had been a Muslim and the perpetrator a Hindu.
The less said about our political parties, the better.
Kudos to The Print for covering this incident.
The victim lady must be a Hindu – probably a poor Dalit. While the primary culprit – the man who initiated the rape and the assault – is a Muslim.
The secular liberal media cabal won’t report on this story as it does not suit their agenda and ideology. Neither would political parties such as Congress, SP, BSP, etc. speak a word as it does not suit their politics.
Honestly, am quite surprised that The Print published a detailed report of this incident.
This is a symptom of a the disease called “communal hatred” perpetrated by the largest party in India. Bad people used hatred earlier too, but was never used openly and publicly as it was used since 2014. I hope the people with a heart would realize the devastation caused by this disease as it results in unimaginable horror and grievous injury to society.
