Shimla, Oct 14 (PTI) Several Hindu outfits, including the VHP, on Wednesday held a sit-in protest at Chamba town, shutting down the market, to press for action against those involved in an alleged incident of cattle slaughter in Sillaghrat area.

Locals had on Tuesday found suspected cattle remains and slaughter equipment in a dense forest area in Ghaghrota region, following which Chamba police registered an FIR against an unidentified person, sources said.

Police have initiated an investigation and legal proceedings are underway in accordance with the law, they said.

The incident sparked tension in the area. The Hindu Jagran Manch, Bajrang Dal, Vishwa Hindu Parishad and other Hindu groups held the protest here, describing the incident as an “attack” on their faith and asserting that such incidents will not be tolerated in ‘Devbhoomi’ (the Land of Gods).

The protest caused traffic jams and led to the closure of local markets. Protesters demanded the immediate arrest of the culprits and strict action against them under the Himachal Pradesh Cattle Protection Act.

They warned that the agitation will continue until the guilty are put behind bars. PTI BPL RT

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
