Guwahati, May 15 (PTI) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Friday that Hoolock Gibbon, an endangered primate found in the state, is now using a special canopy bridge built across a railway track to reach the other side safely.
He maintained it was a significant demonstration of how science can help in conservation.
Sarma shared a video clip on X of the primate using the netted canopy bridge to cross the railway track in Hollongapar Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary in Jorhat district, where the Hoolock Gibbons reside.
“A heartening moment from Hollongapar. A year after installing the arboreal canopy bridge, a Hoolock Gibbon is now using it to safely cross the railway track,” Sarma said in the post.
“A small but significant example that shows how science led interventions can make a real difference in conservation,” he added.
The Hoolock Gibbon is India’s only ape species, with its main stronghold in Assam, particularly within the wildlife sanctuary in Jorhat.
The state government had said last year that many scientifically designed, robust canopy bridges with safety nets to ensure safe crossings for Hollock Gibbons, Golden Langurs and other primates will be deployed at key crossing points over roads and railway tracks, minimising the risk to wildlife.
