Shimla, Nov 7 (PTI) The reorganisation of administrative units in Himachal Pradesh, including districts, subdivisions and tehsils, was discussed at the first meeting of the Commission for Reorganisation of Administrative Units, a statement said on Saturday.
The meeting, held on Friday, was chaired by retired Himachal Pradesh High Court judge Justice Dharam Chand Chaudhary, who heads the commission.
The commission deliberated on the existing administrative structure of districts, subdivisions, tehsils, sub-tehsils, development blocks and other administrative divisions of various departments.
It also held preliminary discussions on the criteria and parameters for examining proposals relating to the creation, merger, bifurcation and reorganisation of administrative units, keeping in view population, geographical conditions, accessibility, administrative efficiency and public convenience.
It was emphasised that the exercise should aim at ensuring better governance, improving access to public services and addressing the administrative requirements of people, particularly in remote and geographically difficult areas of the state.
The commission also discussed the need to obtain relevant information, demographic data and inputs from concerned departments and Deputy Commissioners to facilitate a comprehensive assessment of the existing administrative arrangements.
The importance of consultations with public representatives, stakeholders and other concerned departments was also highlighted.
The financial implications of any proposed reorganisation, including infrastructure and manpower requirements, were discussed. The commission stressed the need for optimum utilisation of available resources and strengthening administrative efficiency without imposing any additional financial burden on the state exchequer.
The commission decided to undertake a detailed examination of the existing administrative set-up and seek necessary information and suggestions from concerned departments and district administrations as part of its deliberations. PTI BPL
