Shimla, Oct 26 (PTI) A scuffle broke out between BJP workers and police in Shimla on Monday when party workers attempted to burn an effigy of AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge in protest against his remarks targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The protest was led by BJP state general secretary and Rajya Sabha MP Dr Sikander Kumar at CTO Chowk near the DC office.

Party workers raised slogans against Kharge and demanded a public apology from him for making objectionable remarks against the prime minister’s deceased parents.

Tensions escalated when the protesters tried to set the effigy on fire. Police personnel intervened to prevent them from doing so, leading to a brief scuffle between the two sides.

Addressing the protesters, Dr Kumar strongly condemned the remarks, saying that insulting the prime minister and his late parents is against the culture, traditional values and democratic norms of the country.

He noted that political differences should not be allowed to descend into personal attacks. “Kharge is a senior political leader, and we respect his position and experience. However, political differences cannot justify insulting someone’s parents or family members. Such language has no place in public life,” he said.

Dr Kumar warned that the BJP would intensify protests across the country if Congress leaders continued to use what he termed objectionable language against the prime minister and his family. PTI COR MPL

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
