Bhubaneswar, Aug 23 (PTI) Heavy rainfall lashed several parts of Odisha under the influence of a low-pressure area in northwestern Bay of Bengal, with the IMD issuing a ‘red warning’ for five districts on Sunday.

Under the impact of the system, heavy rainfall is expected in several districts of Odisha till August 26, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

Several areas in the state received heavy to extreme heavy downpour in the last 24 hours till 8.30 this morning. Of those, at least two places recorded over 200 mm of rainfall.

The IMD issued a ‘red warning’ (take action) for Cuttack, Anugul, Dhenkanal, Kalahandi, and Nabarangpur districts, predicting heavy rainfall.

Thuamula Rampur in Kalahandi district recorded extreme heavy rainfall of 345 mm, while Kashipur in Rayagada district received 212 mm of downpour, the weather office said.

Nineteen other places recorded between 100 mm and 200 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours, it said.

The upper air cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal off the West Bengal-Bangladesh coasts intensified into a low-pressure area around 5.30 am on Sunday, the IMD said.

The weather office has also issued an ‘orange’ warning (be prepared to take action) for Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghapur, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Sonepur, Boudh, Kandhamala, Koraput, Malkangiri, Puri, Khordha, Nayagarh, and Rayagada districts for Sunday.

Similarly, ‘yellow warning’ (be aware) has been issued for Sundergarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Nuapada, Bolangir, Gajapati, and Ganjam districts.

Similar weather conditions would prevail in the state till August 26, the IMD said.

Squally weather, with wind speed of 40-60 kmph was likely to prevail over Bay of Bengal and along and off the West Bengal coast and adjoining Odisha till Monday.

The IMD advised fishermen not to venture into the sea along the Odisha coast till August 24 as conditions would be rough. PTI BBM BBM ACD

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
