Heat retreats as rainfall cools Uttar Pradesh; more wet weather ahead

Lucknow, Jun 11 (PTI) Several parts of Uttar Pradesh received moderate to heavy rainfall during the past 24 hours, bringing relief from the heat and pushing temperatures below normal in many districts, while the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast more rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds over the state.

According to IMD data, Bansgaon in Gorakhpur district recorded the highest rainfall of 75 mm during the 24 hours ending at 8.30 am on Thursday.

Fatehpur tehsil and Ramnagar in Barabanki recorded 48 mm and 46 mm rainfall, respectively, while Azamgarh received 43.6 mm. Dhanghata in Sant Kabir Nagar logged 48 mm rainfall, Gorakhpur city 30.2 mm, Mohammedabad in Ghazipur 30 mm, Gaighat in Ballia 29.2 mm and Ghazipur CWC 28.2 mm.

Katarnia Ghat in Bahraich and Akbarpur in Ambedkar Nagar recorded 25 mm each.

In western Uttar Pradesh, Bareilly recorded the highest rainfall at 40 mm, followed by Muzaffarnagar with 26.7 mm. Sahaswan in Budaun received 17 mm, while Atrauli in Aligarh and Sambhal recorded 16 mm each.

The rainfall was accompanied by a sharp fall in temperatures across eastern Uttar Pradesh.

Ballia recorded a maximum temperature of 29.8 degrees Celsius, 9.2 degrees below normal, while Gorakhpur registered 30.1 degrees Celsius, 7.1 degrees below normal. Bahraich recorded 31.2 degrees Celsius, 6.8 degrees below normal, Ghazipur 31.0 degrees Celsius, 7.2 degrees below normal, Sultanpur 33.6 degrees Celsius, 5.8 degrees below normal, Varanasi Airport 34.5 degrees Celsius, 5.6 degrees below normal and Barabanki 34.0 degrees Celsius, 4.3 degrees below normal.

Despite the widespread rainfall, parts of Bundelkhand and southwestern Uttar Pradesh remained hot.

Jhansi recorded the state’s highest maximum temperature at 43.4 degrees Celsius, 1.8 degrees above normal, followed by Orai at 42.8 degrees Celsius, also 1.8 degrees above normal. Fatehgarh recorded 40.8 degrees Celsius, Fatehpur and Hamirpur 40.2 degrees Celsius each, Basti 40.0 degrees Celsius and Churk 39.4 degrees Celsius.

Prayagraj recorded 39.2 degrees Celsius, while Kanpur city and Agra registered 38.5 degrees Celsius and 38.9 degrees Celsius, respectively.

According to the IMD, rain and thundershowers are very likely at a few places across the state on Friday. It has issued a warning for thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and squally winds of 50-60 kmph, gusting up to 70 kmph, at isolated places in western Uttar Pradesh, while similar thunderstorm activity with winds of 50-60 kmph is likely at isolated places in eastern Uttar Pradesh.

Hailstorms are also likely at isolated places in the western parts of the state.

For Lucknow and adjoining areas, the weather office has forecast a partly cloudy sky becoming generally cloudy, with one or two spells of rain or thundershowers. The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to remain around 37 degrees Celsius and 25 degrees Celsius, respectively.
