Gurugram: A video of police personnel purportedly parading an accused, with his head shaved and wearing a skirt, through the markets of Haryana’s Rewari is being circulated on social media.
The man had allegedly tried to extort a property dealer. Handcuffed, he was being taken from the Crime Branch police station in Purani Tehsil to Moti Chowk, the town’s main market, it is learnt.
In purported videos of the incident, the man can be seen limping. He has been identified as Rohit alias Kalia, recently released after 12 years in jail in relation to a different case.
This latest incident comes two days after the police reportedly paraded other three youths accused of theft. These three were also seen limping, according to local news reports.
When contacted by ThePrint, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Surender Sheoran said it was incorrect that the accused was forced to wear a skirt.
Regarding the earlier incident, Sheoran said the accused were being taken somewhere as part of investigation. “It is just a simple matter of the police not using a vehicle to take them to the other place for some recoveries. Yes, they were on foot. But it should not be termed as parading.”
Police sources said that on the morning of 17 February, information was received about a theft at a cloth shop in the Railway Road market. The police arrived at the scene and found that thefts had been committed at three different shops.
Three persons—identified as Rahul and Ajay from Manglesar Majra and Monu from Gurjar Majra—had broken the locks of two cloth stores and a jewellery shop and stolen goods worth lakhs. They were subsequently arrested.
As for Rohit alias Kalia, a police source said there is a case for attempted murder against him, adding that he was in jail for 12 years and resumed his criminal activities as soon as he came out. On 19 February, he reportedly went to the office of a property dealer, brandished a revolver, and threatened him saying, “If you want to do business, keep Rs 10 lakh ready.”
After he left, the property dealer contacted the police who arrested Kalia on 20 February.
