Chandigarh, Aug 20 (PTI) Haryana Police has intensified action against objectionable and illegal activities on social media and the internet by strengthening its digital surveillance mechanism against cybercrime and online misinformation, the force said on Thursday.

Social Media Monitoring and URL Blocking teams are continuously monitoring online activity to identify phishing links, fake websites, fraudulent applications, misleading advertisements, fake profiles and other illegal online content, it said .

Till July this year, a total of 16,308 illegal online content/items were removed, the police said in a statement.

DGP Ajay Singhal said that in the digital era, the nature of crime is changing rapidly, with criminals increasingly misusing technology to target ordinary citizens.

The officer said that Haryana Police’s digital monitoring is not limited to cyber fraud alone, and attention is also being given to misleading information circulated on social media.

As part of the endeavour, the enforcement agency’s Online Crimes Against Women and Children Unit is monitoring harmful, objectionable and illegal online content related to women and children.

As soon as any such material comes to notice, a notice is issued to the concerned social media platform under Section 79(3)(b) of the Information Technology Act, seeking its immediate removal.

Superintendent of Police Mayank Gupta said the main objective of this campaign is to give society a safe, aware and trustworthy digital environment. PTI SUN VN VN

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
