Hamirpur (HP), Oct 20 (PTI) The Hamirpur Nagar Nigam in Himachal Pradesh has stepped up action against encroachments on government land in the main bazaar ahead of the festive season, warning shopkeepers of fines and confiscation of goods for obstructing public spaces, officials said on Tuesday.

With markets witnessing an increase in footfall during the festive season, the civic body has directed shopkeepers not to place goods or other items in front of their shop shutters, they said.

Hamirpur Municipal Corporation Commissioner Rakesh Kumar Sharma warned that violations would invite fines and seizure of goods.

A five-member team has been tasked with conducting inspections every morning and evening to check encroachments that could obstruct pedestrian movement.

The team will also inspect areas around fire hydrants to ensure fire brigade vehicles can access water points without obstruction during emergencies, officials said.

Sharma urged shopkeepers to cooperate with the civic body to ensure that people can move freely and shop comfortably during the festive season. Legal action would be taken against violators, he said.

The district administration has also ordered one-way traffic in Hamirpur town to ease congestion and facilitate movement through the main bazaar.

Hamirpur Superintendent of Police Balbir Singh Thakur said no one would be allowed to cause inconvenience to the public and that those violating the law would face action and fines. PTI COR BPL MDO

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
