New Delhi: A 52-year-old woman was arrested by Gurugram Police Monday, and later given bail, after a video of her purportedly assaulting her domestic worker at her residence in an upscale high-rise society in Gurugram went viral on social media.
The accused woman has been identified as Ruchira Sachdeva. The woman who was allegedly assaulted by Sachdeva is a Nepali citizen, not a minor, and has been working at Sachdeva’s house at The Camellias in Sector 42, Gurugram for over two years now, police sources said.
The 90-second video has sparked massive outrage on social media. In the clip, which appears to be recorded from a neighbour’s window, shows the two women in the kitchen. In the video clip, Sachdeva is seen purportedly slapping and shoving the worker, grabbing her face and pulling her hair. She is a homemaker and wife of a Gurugram-based liquor businessman.
Gurugram Police said that neither a complainant nor the victim herself had appeared before them to report the incident. On Monday, the team at Police Station Sushant Lok took suo motu cognisance, initiating an inquiry regarding the video circulating on social media platforms.
The police are currently looking for the domestic worker who was allegedly assaulted. “Police are making all attempts to get in touch with the victim to find out what happened at the apartment for further necessary legal action,” an officer told ThePrint.
“An argument had ensued between Sachdeva and her domestic worker over household chores,” the officer said. It was found during inquiry that the incident seen in the viral video had occurred on 24 July, and that the worker quit the job on 27 July.
The case was registered under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Sections 115 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 127(2) (wrongful confinement), a senior police officer told ThePrint.
“The offence is bailable in nature. She has secured bail,” the officer said. Further action in the case will be taken as per rules. The case is under investigation, he added.
