Ahmedabad, Sep 14 (PTI) The Gujarat Police’s Cyber Centre of Excellence has busted an inter-state syndicate allegedly involved in sending bomb threat emails to government offices, educational institutions and courts, and arrested two persons from Bihar and Jharkhand.
The initial investigation showed that the accused allegedly received financial support from associates in Bangladesh and cryptocurrency wallets were used for financial transactions.
According to a release issued on Monday, Roshan Kumar Bhumihar (Rai) was apprehended from Bhagalpur in Bihar for allegedly sending a bomb threat email to the Gujarat Secretariat on September 10.
Another accused, Gulshan Kumar Singh, was held in Deoghar, Jharkhand. Police suspect he is the main source and allegedly provided 5,13,847 unique email IDs and passwords, which were used to send threat emails and commit other cybercrimes.
The investigation was launched after an email was received on September 10 at the email ID of the Gujarat government’s Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Department, threatening to blow up the Chief Minister’s office, state legislative assembly, the Prime Minister, Union Home Minister and countries supporting India during the recently concluded BRICS summit in Delhi, the press note said.
Police said technical analysis and digital evidence indicated the email was operated from Bhagalpur, leading to Rai’s arrest.
During questioning, he allegedly told police that Singh had provided him the email ID, following which the latter was also arrested.
Police said Rai and Singh had a list containing 5,13,847 unique email IDs and passwords, allegedly created to send threatening emails to government offices, schools, colleges and courts and for other cyber and illegal activities.
The investigation also showed that the accused had allegedly received financial support from associates based in Bangladesh and had shared the email ID list with them.
Cryptocurrency wallets were also allegedly used for the financial transactions, the press note added.
A coordinated operation was conducted with assistance from Gujarat, Bhagalpur and Deoghar police, officials said, adding that further technical investigation is underway. PTI PJT NSK
