Bengaluru, Jul 16 (PTI) Karnataka Home Minister Priyank Kharge on Thursday said the state government is developing a comprehensive and collaborative framework to curb misinformation, fake news and hate speech, which have a direct impact on public administration, public safety, and law and order.
In this regard, an important consultation meeting was recently held with representatives of the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI), along with representatives of major social media and digital platforms, the Minister said in a statement.
The meeting stressed the need for the government and digital platforms to work together in building a responsible digital ecosystem.
It also held detailed discussions on further strengthening mechanisms to swiftly identify and take appropriate action against misinformation and online content that threatens social harmony.
As part of this initiative, it was decided to appoint Dedicated Points of Contact between the government’s Information Disorder Tackling Unit and various social media platforms, and to establish a special communication mechanism for rapid response to such issues, the Minister who also holds information technology and biotechnology portfolio and e governance, said.
Kharge said the Information Disorder Tackling Unit will be jointly led by the IT-BT Department and the Home Department.
“The mechanism will facilitate faster coordination on harmful online content, enable timely action, and ensure an effective response,” the statement said.
He added that the Karnataka government remains committed to creating a safe, transparent and responsible digital ecosystem through continuous collaboration among the government, digital platforms and other relevant stakeholders. PTI GMS ROH
