New Delhi: A fortnight after Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced creation of 11,000 free Wi-Fi hotspots in the city over the next three months, the government has now decided to provide upto 1 lakh free hotspots through integration of Wi-Fi routers with CCTV cameras, ThePrint has learnt.

This means CCTV cameras will be installed with Wi-Fi routers in it and the entire system will work through a wireless mesh network. This integration will start after the first two phases of free Wi-Fi installation is over, sources said.

A mesh network is a network topology in which each node relays data for the network. All mesh nodes cooperate in the distribution of data in the network. It can be applied to both wired and wireless networks.

The aim of this unique integration is to enable Delhi Police, CBI and other investigating agencies to see live footage of a location in Delhi from any part of the world, a senior government official told ThePrint on condition of anonymity.

The Wi-Fi project

The government plans to provide free Wi-Fi hotspots every half a kilometer on Delhi roads.

While for the first phase, every hotspot will be available in a radius of 80 km, a mechanism is being figured out to ensure that Wi-Fi is accessible at every 500 metres on main roads and every 1,000 metres in areas away from main roads.

In the first phase of the Wi-Fi project, up to 200 users will be able to simultaneously access the internet at a speed ranging from 200 Mbps to 1 Gbps. The hotspots will have a coverage range of 80 metres each to begin with.

Tenders invited for the project

Gopal Mohan, adviser to the chief minister and who has been working on the project, told ThePrint, “The concerns regarding the speed of the internet will also be addressed. It is 15GB of data on a monthly basis and in case a user crosses that mark, it will not be free anymore.”

Mohan, who visited six countries over a period of five years to research for various projects of the Delhi government, said, contrary to popular perception, no foreign country provides free Wi-Fi, except at airports and certain other public places.

The government has already invited tender for the project.

“The company that finally gets the tender will be given a licence for providing Wi-Fi if it follows the guidelines of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India,” he added.

How one can access the free WiFi

Users will have to first fill up a form online — details of which will be given later — and a One Time Password will be sent to them every month when they log in.

Of the 11,000 free Wi-Fi hotspots, 4,000 will be at bus stops, while the remaining 7,000 will be installed across various others spots in the city, including at big public parks and mohalla clinics. A consolidated list of the exact hotspot locations is yet to be prepared.

  2. Kejriwal Saab, I need a2 bedroom flat free. Also I need free coupons every month to buy my groceries. Anyway you have given free train pass to my wife. She will use that to go and buy groceries. I am sure you will continue to give 150 units of power free per month and 100 liters of water free per day. Sir, one more thing: I need a one week vacation in a year. Can you please tell Indian Railways to issue free pass for travel by me and my family? And 15,00,000 ₹ loan interest free for 20 years tenure. Main aapka aabhari hoon. Dhanyawad.

    • Perhaps u have born with silver spoon in your mouth. Never faced hardship. U talked about it is dead cheap and hence not to be taken. This point is well taken and free would never arise if you provide this dead cheap from your pocket to the needy. But u prefer to be looted by politicians even this dead cheap instead of providing to needy. Many come for my help to get their train reservations, job search on internet, etc- I hardly serve to few because I have less time than to spend from that dead cheap.
I hope now u will provide this some dead cheap thing to one or two who are amongst millions who need it then govt job and Magsaysay award winner Kejriwal’s job is over.

    • U should get a good slap and beating also free.
You begger need a 2 bhk , rather u should contribute in donating one of the rooms of your big flat to slump dwellers, at least RS 1000 in every month to them.
U rich filthy person will never understand the pain and need of those who has nothing left in their pocket to avail the rich people luxary of of having their own WiFi. Don’t they require info to apply get info for their well beings.
You are happy withose politicians and parties who loot the same money in their own pocket and party fund instead of using those saved money for those who r needy.
Your type person will run firs to avail the free social welfare schemes instead of paying for that so as to save the resources for needy.
