Police said the attack took place Monday morning at the coaching centre where Ankit Garg took political science classes.

New Delhi: A 31-year-old teacher of a private coaching institute was shot dead by two unidentified assailants in northwest Delhi’s Mahindra Park area Monday morning.

According to preliminary reports, the assailants are believed to be the family members of a Muslim student with whom the teacher, Ankit Garg, was allegedly having a relationship. However, police are yet to comment on this.

Sources said the couple planned to get married, but the girl’s family was fiercely opposed to their relationship on religious grounds.

Sub-inspector Ranvir Mahindra said the attack took place between 8 am and 8.30 am inside a coaching centre, where Garg, who used to teach political science, arrived to take the first class of the day.

Citing eyewitness accounts, police said Garg was shot at the back of his head by a masked gunman, who was believed to be waiting by the stairwell leading to an entrance of the institute for 25 minutes.

According to eyewitnesses, the woman’s brother was at the scene of the crime. However, police told ThePrint that the matter is still under investigation.

Police are believed to have questioned nine members of the girl’s family in connection with the alleged murder, but a clear motive is yet to be determined.

The two gunmen fled the scene shortly after the attack and they have not been identified yet. Garg’s body has been handed over to his family.

This incident come less than a year after 23-year-old Ankit Saxena was murdered by the father of his long-term Muslim girlfriend in west Delhi’s Raghubir Nagar.
