Gorakhpur (UP), Aug 9 (PTI) The Gorakhpur Municipal Corporation (GMC) has floated a tender for the fourth time to select an agency for microchipping stray and abandoned dogs, after three earlier attempts failed to attract any bidders in the last six months, officials said on Sunday.
The civic body is now hoping to finalise an agency by August 14 for the project, which is being undertaken in compliance with the Supreme Court directives on animal management and welfare.
Under the proposed system, each stray dog will be implanted with a microchip carrying a unique identification number. The chip will be linked to a digital database containing information on the animal’s sterilisation, anti-rabies vaccination, health condition and behavioural history.
Officials said the database would help the GMC determine which dogs have already been sterilised or vaccinated, preventing duplication of procedures and improving monitoring of animal birth control programmes.
It will also record instances of aggressive behaviour, allowing authorities to identify areas reporting more dog attacks and take targeted measures.
The system is expected to assist the civic body in planning vaccination, treatment, feeding and shelter management. Microchip records could also help trace owners who abandon pet dogs on the streets.
