Nashik (Maharashtra), Jul 23 (PTI) The Godavari and other rivers in Nashik district have risen due to the incessant rains over the last two days, officials said on Thursday.
The Godavari river may cross the danger mark soon, they said.
Water was discharged from the Gangapur dam, adding to the rise in the water level in the river. Some other rivers in the district including Darna, Girna and Kadva too were swollen.
Nashik city received 100.6 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours up to 8.30 on Thursday morning and the weather department has issued an orange alert forecasting heavy rains in isolated places, officials said.
Small temples in Ramkund area and Goda Ghat along the Godavari were submerged. The famous ‘Dutondya Maruti’ idol had submerged up to its chest.
Waterlogging was reported in some areas of the city, leading to traffic congestion. Many parts of the city also suffered power cuts.
With the discharge of water from various dams including Palkhed, Haranbari, Nandur Madhmeshwar weir and Gangapur, the district administration has appealed to the citizens living along the banks of the Godavari, Kadva, Girna and Mosam rivers to be alert.
People should not venture into rivers, and shift their valuables, livestock and other belongings to safer places, the administration said.
Water stock in the dams in the district has gone up to 43,685 MCFt (61.86 per cent of the capacity). Water stock in the Gangapur dam which supplies water to the city has gone up to 5,107 MCFt (90.71 per cent).
One side of Trimbak-Jawhar highway was closed in the morning due to a mudslide but after some time the debris was removed and the road was cleared for traffic.
Traffic on the Bhamdharan to Manjargaon road in Igatpuri taluka was closed due to a landslide.
