Kolkata, Jul 28 (PTI) West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Tuesday said the glory of police was tainted during the previous TMC regime and asserted that his government would make efforts to restore it.
Speaking at a programme at the state police headquarters, Bhabani Bhawan, Adhikari said the government has decided to form an investigative agency, modelled on the NIA.
“The glory of the West Bengal Police and the Kolkata Police was tainted during the previous (TMC) government. This has also affected the state’s image. We will take steps to improve policing and restore West Bengal’s image,” Adhikari said.
He said the state government has reached an agreement with a Gujarat-based university where Bengal police personnel would be sent for training.
Adhikari also announced plans for fresh recruitment of around one lakh personnel in the police force.
He launched a police helpline service, with four dedicated numbers for citizens to lodge complaints.
Adhikari said measures were being taken to strengthen police infrastructure.
