Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 20 (PTI) Keralam-based deep-tech robotics company Genrobotics on Thursday said that it has opened a new production facility here, marking a significant expansion of its manufacturing and research capabilities into defence production, aerospace and space technology.
The facility, located at KINFRA, Menamkulam, near Thumba, will focus on the development and production of robotics technologies for defence and space applications, marking the company’s expansion from its established standing in sanitation and medical robotics, a release from the company said.
The facility was inaugurated by APM Mohammed Hanish, Additional Chief Secretary (Industries), with Balagopal Chandrashekar, Chairman, Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation (KSIDC), and Santhosh Koshy Thomas, Managing Director of the Kerala Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (KINFRA), addressing the gathering at the function.
The Menamkulam unit of the company is designed for research and development-led production, with a particular focus on robotics for defence and space applications, the release said.
The company has also strengthened its aerospace capabilities in recent months by bringing senior talent from the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) into its team, it added.
The new facility forms part of a larger expansion of Genrobotics’ manufacturing infrastructure in Keralam.
The company’s under-construction production facility at Palakkad, which is going to be its largest, is nearing completion, and it will focus on sanitation and medical technologies, the release said.
A new headquarters-cum-research and development facility is also being developed at Chanthavila in Thiruvananthapuram and, once operational, the three facilities are expected to add a combined one lakh square feet of infrastructure to Genrobotics’ operations in Keralam, it said.
The expansion will strengthen the company’s positioning of Keralam as its principal manufacturing and innovation base while broadening its technology portfolio across sanitation, industrial, medical, defence and aerospace robotics, it added.
Vimal Govind, Genrobotics co-founder and CEO, said the company’s journey has evolved significantly since its early work in sanitation robotics.
“We began by going where no one else would — into the sewers. Today, we’re headed where few dare to dream — into space. From sanitation to space, that’s the journey Genrobotics has been on, and this is just the beginning,” he said at the inaugural function.
The company said that its expansion into defence and space comes at a time when India is seeking to strengthen domestic capabilities in advanced manufacturing, robotics and aerospace technologies.
The addition of a dedicated research and development and production infrastructure could also create opportunities for Genrobotics to develop technology for specialised environments where remote operation and robotic intervention can reduce human risk, the release said. PTI HMP ADB
