Bengaluru, Jul 16 (PTI) GBA Chief Commissioner Maheshwar Rao on Friday directed officials to register criminal cases against owner of buildings in vulnerable localities that fail to install mandatory fire safety systems.

Addressing a coordination meeting with various departments under the GBA, he ordered fire safety audits in the city’s sensitive locations.

He directed the concerned authorities to initiate criminal proceedings against owners of buildings that fail to provide the required fire safety measures, the GBA said in a release.

Officials were also instructed to install fire hydrants along newly constructed white-topping roads in vulnerable areas to ensure water availability during fire emergencies.

The installed hydrants must be properly maintained and inspected every month, and any defects must be rectified immediately, it added.

Noting that sticker notices have been issued since July 10 to remove abandoned vehicles parked on streets across the five City Corporations under the GBA, the Chief Commissioner gave seven days to owners to remove their vehicles after paying the prescribed penalty.

“If they fail to do so within the notice period, traffic police have been instructed to tow the vehicles immediately,” he said.

Observing that the GBA receives criticism because Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) works and road restoration are often not carried out properly, Rao said every BWSSB work site must display a name board containing project details.

He also asked officials to ensure that road-cutting works are completed within the stipulated time and that road restoration is carried out with high quality standards.

Officials were directed to expedite ongoing civil works under the Special Infrastructure Project (SIP) grant on major arterial and sub-arterial roads and commence asphalting works. They were also instructed to coordinate with the traffic police to ensure smooth vehicular movement during the works and maintain quality standards, the release said.

A month-long “Freedom from Waste” campaign will be conducted throughout August, the Chief Commissioner said the City Corporations, K-RIDE, Railways and BMRCL (Metro) authorities have been instructed to jointly identify locations containing construction and demolition waste, mounds of soil, overgrown vegetation and other waste.

Officials were further directed to complete necessary preparatory work, including collecting information on unused quarries, registered and operational vehicles, and deploying the required workforce to ensure the campaign’s success.

Among the key decisions taken at the meeting were to speed up the sterilisation programme for street dogs, to constitute Town Vending Committees and expediting the distribution of new identity cards to street vendors. PTI KSU ROH
